DNA Matchmaking
WASHINGTON POST - Jan 24 - Eric Holzle is the founder of ScientificMatch.com, one of a new generation of online dating companies that use genetic information to match singles with potential partners. ScientificMatch subscribers are asked to send in a DNA sample which is then analyzed and entered into a database. ScientificMatch launched its service in December 2007 in the Boston area and is planning to expand around the country through partnerships with traditional matchmakers. Holzle won't say how many users the site has or whether the company is profitable.

TELEGRAPH.CO.UK - Jan 23 - "Our product is love," says Ross Williams, whose Global Personals business accounts for one-third of the UK online dating market. In the late 1990s, he set up the web design and development company Rawnet. By 2003 he create a behind-the-scenes "white label" system and let partners brand and market dating sites. His company, Global Personals, also runs its own site, Singles365.com, and provides the back end for dating sites branded by magazines Men's Health, FHM and Cosmopolitan. The company has grown from 10 to 80 people, and is expanding internationally, first to South Africa and Australia, and next to the US.

FriendFinder Sets IPO Terms
REUTERS - Jan 10 - FriendFinder set the terms of its initial public offering on Friday, cutting its size by more than half. FriendFinder's properties range from AdultFriendFinder.com to BigChurch.com and SeniorFriendFinder.com. It also publishes pictures and video, and the magazine Penthouse. FriendFinder plans to sell 20M shares for $10 to $12, each. At the midpoint that would raise $220M. The company filed for an IPO in December 2008 of up to $460M, but did not disclose details.

Online Dating Industry Will Grow By Almost A Third
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD - Jan 10 - The Australian online dating industry grew by 5% last year and is expected to grow by a further 5 to 10% this year. According to dating site RSVP survey 50% of respondents had tried online dating and 10% had met their current or most recent partner on the internet. Business analyst IBISWorld expects the industry to earn ~$100M from subscriptions and advertising this year. Cupid Media, Australia's biggest online dating company, has 33 websites that specialise in religion, ethnicity, sexual preference and physical appearance. The company started at least three new websites every year and had ~15M customers in 50 countries. IBISWorld does, however, expect the boom to slow in a few years with the increased sophistication of social networks.

Japanese Singles Wish For Marriage, Government Wishes For More Babies
CHINA VIEW - Jan 1 - The number of Japanese babies born in the country in 2009 have decreased from 22,000 of 2008 to 1,069,000. The government said the population decline may last for the future years, as the Japanese population is getting more reluctant to marriage and giving birth. The term "konkatsu" in Japanese, meaning "marriage-hunter," has been widely reported in global media and describes men and women who want to cut straight to the (matrimonial) chase. In the early 1970s the annual number of marriages in Japan, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, exceeded 1M and the birthrate at this time was at a level of 19 (per 1,000 population). The marriage rate currently stands at 5.8 (per 1,000 population), with one in four of these unions likely to end in divorce.
