February 27, 2019 -- /PR NEWSWIRE/ -- After getting the request from Craigslist, the Cragly team consulted with some lawyers. It's not easy for a startup to fight with a big company in its early stage. So, the team finally gave up fighting against the request and decided to change the app name to "Pernals." The new name "Pernals" is derived from the word "Personals," which indicates that the app is a personals app.
"We understand the concerns of Craigslist since it's a well-known and old brand," said Alesandra Madison, the co-founder of Cragly. "Also, we have the utmost respect for Craigslist. Unfortunately, we had promoted the brand Cragly for a period of time. Name-change required us to rebuild most of our marketing materials and strategies. It's time-consuming and cost us a lot of resources. After changing the name, our downloads dropped for some time."
The app was primarily created to help people who like personals-ad-style websites and apps. "Tinder is now the most popular dating app. Too many other dating and hookup apps are copying its swiping feature. Some people are tired of swiping on those apps. After Craigslist closed its personals section, people now have fewer choices," said Alesandra Madison, the co-founder of Cragly. "We created Cragly aiming to be the first personal ad app to fill the gap after the closing of Craigslist personals. But we didn't mean to create confusion between Cragly and Craigslist."
In the new version of "Pernals," the team added a search function in response to the request from its users. People not only want to find local personal ads but also want to search for local users. Some users don't post personal ads after joining. Thus, the search function increases the chance of finding more local people.
