You Are Who Google Says You Are
CNET NEWS - Oct 15 - A new survey by BrandYourself, an online reputation company, and polling giant Harris Interactive shows that when it comes to voting, business and dating, people place a lot of emphasis on what they find in personal search results. 86% used a search engine to find more information about another person. 75% of online U.S. adults have searched their own name, 48% say most of the search results about them aren't positive. 43% have searched a potential date, significant other, or ex boyfriend/girlfriend, making romantic searches the most common search among U.S. adults.

Online Dating In Tandem
HUFFINGTON POST - Oct 10 - Tandem, a new dating site, lets singles bring their friends along on their hunt for love. "People are a lot more at ease when they're with someone they know, and so we wanted to build a site that leverages that," said founder Will Tungpagasit, who formerly served as the lead engineer at TaskRabbit, a startup offering pay-per-task personal assistants. Users don't need to be single to sign up for Tandem, they need to know someone who is. New users are required to add at least one "wing" -- Tandem lingo for the friend with whom one is pairing up -- to register for the site. Tandem, which is free to use, will be available in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Madison, Wis., and Austin, Texas, at launch.

APPRENEUR-DIARIES.COM - Oct 12 - Blendr (the straight version of Grindr) has just launched on Android. After checking out both Blendr’s and Badoo's description, one can see that they are almost the same. Actually, the screenshots of the app are the same and the app themselves are exactly the same. If you download both apps and sign in both, it actually tells you in one that you have already been signed in the other. Furthermore, the apps look exactly the same and the people around you are the same, too.

OKCupid To Venture Into Housemate Matching
SOCIAL TIMES - Oct 9 - OKCupid is beta-testing a housemate-matching service on an undisclosed domain, according to co-founder and CEO Sam Yagan. Housemates, Yagan explained, are a logical use case for a platform that matches people based how they answer questions and how they say they’d like their matches to answer them. “The same Q&A format and algorithm applies for roommates. Do you stay up late? Do you do drugs? Do you have a girlfriend? It applies almost directly,” Yagan noted. It will likely leverage users’ Facebook profiles to find potential shared interests and social connections, Yagan said.

MeetMe Now A Single Global Brand
PRESS RELEASE - Oct 9 - The transition of Quepasa.com users to the MeetMe platform is complete. MeetMe is now a single global brand. This transition marks the final step of the November 2011 merger between Quepasa Corporation and Insider Guides, DBA myYearbook. In mid-August, the company launched in Spanish and Portuguese across all platforms and indicated MeetMe would be in a half dozen languages by the end of the year. A Match Made In Heaven
BARRON'S - Oct 7 - Greg Blatt, a deal-savvy CEO, is leading IAC/InterActiveCorp's transformation. IAC retains 23 operating businesses and more than 150 Web and media-related brands, all of which garner 5.91 billion page views per month. Blatt cut his teeth in mergers and acquisitions. In nearly two years as CEO, Blatt has completed nine deals of his own, costing $700M. The wheeling and dealing that defined IAC might well continue, although Blatt predicts that the company's two main businesses—online dating and Internet search—are here to stay. IAC dominates the former through Match.com and 30 other dating sites, and offers search services through Ask.com and dozens of apps. Combined, these businesses accounted for ~75% of the company's $2B in revenue in 2011. Half of Match.com subscribers sign on to the site with a mobile device. But there no longer is a Match.com iPhone app. IAC pulled it because Apple wanted 30% of Match.com revenue generated through an iPhone app, a proportion Blatt calls egregious compared with the 2% to 3% retailers pay to credit-card companies on the Internet. Match.com switched to an HTML5 application.

OkCupid reports 1M of its 3M users utilize the GPS feature. And HowAboutWe estimates that 1 in 4 of its online daters are now incorporating location based dating into their search for a soul mate. One of the biggest problems with GPS dating is the immediacy of it. MeetMoi, which sends profiles of people in your general location, says they never share a user's exact location. SinglesAroundMe has privacy options that allow users to turn off their location GPS or to hide their profile.
