ABC.NET.AU - June 25 - Cupid Media, an online dating company that operates ~35 niche dating sites such as ChristianCupid, MilitaryCupid and SingleParentLove has been found in breach of privacy laws after hackers accessed the personal information of ~245K of its Australian users. At the time of the incident, Cupid did not have password encryption processes in place.
This is a rehash of an old story that occurred more than 18 months ago.
As noted by the Privacy Commissioner the situation was delt with rapidly. Passwords have been salted and hashed since January 2013. A whole range of changes to security practices and data storage were also made. No financial information was compromised as we do not store credit card data or bank account details. The numbers quoted in the press may make for good headlines, however the record set contained a large amount of junk accounts and duplicates. Many of the record sets do not contain dates of birth.
