How does that make any sense? The whole point, presumably, is to blackmail men into not having their wives find out. If you then send letters to their wives, why pay when the cats now out of the bag? Perhaps it's a way to intimidate other men into paying the ransom.

Succumbing to blackmail never works. You're just an easier mark now.
