MIT TECHNOLOGY REVIEW - Jan 26 - The latest apps bring back the intimacy of the spoken word - but there are serious moderation issues to be addressed. The best-known audio-focused network is Clubhouse but it lacks moderation. Gaming chat app Discord has also exploded in popularity. The service uses voice-over-IP software to translate spoken chat into text. By Oct, Discord estimated 6.7M users - up from 1.4M in Feb. Jimi Tele, the CEO of Chekmate, a "text-free" dating app that connects users through voice and video, says he wanted to launch an app that would be "catfish-proof". Users start voice memos that average 5s and then get progressively longer. And while Chekmate has a video option, Tele says the app's users favor using just their voices. This immediacy and authenticity is the reason Gilles Poupardin created Cappuccino, an app that takes voice recordings from a closed group of friends or family and delivers them as downloadable audio.

HER.IE - Jan 26 - One study published in Science Advances found that among men who use dating apps, when deciding on what kind of woman they want to date many will choose a woman younger than them rather than a peer there own age. Most men only found women desirable up to the age of 18! Other research conducted by OkCupid a few years ago had very similar findings. Not only are the findings of the research disheartening for women genuinely trying to date through these apps but it is also concerning that so many men are messaging teenagers.
OPW - Jan 25 - There are quite a few anti-Tinder apps now and even Facebook is getting in on the Internet dating action. So why is Tinder so gosh darned difficult to compete with? This video from Pete's Bits does a nice job of overviewing the psychology of Tinder.

E27 - Jan 25 - When the first newspaper was published in 1690, it gave rise to the earliest ads. Among these were personal ads by bachelors searching for eligible wives. Fast forward to the cuffing season of 1965, when two Harvard students used an IBM 1401 to create the first computer-based matchmaking service, Operation Match. From there, the world's first online dating website, Match was launched in 1995. Dating websites have evolved into dating apps driven by algorithms and AI. When users first start using a dating app, their recommendations are almost entirely dependent on collaborative filtering, or what other users think. So, everything they click and interact with on a dating app is detected, tracked, and stored as part of a constant feedback loop. A newer (and more exciting) development in dating apps is their ability to recommend profile matches based on AI and machine learning. AI is the science of simulating intelligent behaviour in computers, enabling the latter to exhibit human-like behavioural traits like reasoning, common sense, and decision-making. For people using AI-powered dating apps, this means a higher chance at receiving quality matches, as opposed to endless swiping and filtering through unfavourable matches or fake profiles.

GAYTIMES.CO.UK - Jan 22 - Taimi is the LGBTQ+ platform that features a social network and dating app. The platform was recently recognised by Gay Times for its efforts to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people around the world.
Q: How did the pandemic impact Taimi?
A: For us, it was truly heartbreaking as we planned so many pride-focused partnerships. We had to swiftly adapt and turn towards online opportunities. We also saw a tremendous change in users' behaviour. They became more involved, more active, created 45% more content, posted 60% more stories and liked each other more.
Q: What is Taimi doing to be more diverse?
A: We are certainly putting a lot of effort in making the platform more accessible, providing a space that is safe and free of judgement and even rewriting our system to improve the overall experience on the app.
Q: What has been the feedback from your users on the features you've recently implemented?
A: The feedback has been incredible when it comes to our latest addition - livestreams. We also introduce Live Duet and Versus battles to make streams more interactive and fun.
Q: Any concerns about competitor Blued?
A: We have tremendous respect for our colleagues at Blued. But they're mostly oriented at gay men, so there is still a lot of work to be done to become a full-scale LGBTQ+ platform.
Q: Recently Taimi issued an open letter to advertisers, without naming names, what companies would you like to work with?
A: The brand needs to share our values.
Q: What are the company's plans for 2021?
A: Our streaming features & everything around them will be top priority for Taimi in 2021. We also plan to launch public pages for companies, organizations and brands to bring them closer to their core audience.
DALLAS BUSINESS JOURNAL - Jan 22 - The price target for the company's stock rose to $169 from $157. It said its "Mobile App Download" tracker pointed to an increase of Tinder subscribers of 320K, or 17%, in the Q4 compared to the firm's estimates of 280K and a consensus for a jump of 250K. Hinge should show growth of about three-fourths.
