ICLG - Tinder has been targeted by a class action in Illinois over how it stores its users' biometric data. The claim, which was initially filed in Oct and moved at the end of Nov to the federal court, is being made under Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), the same law which gave rise to two huge class-action settlements involving TikTok and Snapchat earlier this year. The lawsuit claims that the companies violated the BIPA by improperly scanning the faces of people who upload their photos to verify their identities for their profiles. Under the Act, companies must tell people that their information is being collected or stored, inform them about the purpose and time span of the collection, and obtain a written release indicating informed consent.
