CANADIAN LAWYER - LOT Network, a non-profit organisation, offers startups protection against patent trolls that acquire patents without producing any goods or services or conducting research and development. Patent litigation initiated by patent trolls has increased consistently since 2016, holding steady in 2022 compared to 2021. The study by High-Tech Solutions and commissioned by the LOT Network analysed the behaviour of these companies that account for almost 60% of patent litigation worldwide, and some sources say that reaches 88% in the high-tech sector. Attacks from patent trolls can deter investors and derail financing initiatives, including IPOs. The LOT Network provides immunity against patent litigation stemming from those assets by providing a license to all other network members. The members range from market leaders such as IBM, Toyota, Visa, Canon, Google, Red Hat, Tesla, Cisco, Amazon, Microsoft, Alibaba, and Salesforce, to smaller companies across industries, including dating app ChristianCafe.com, and deep-tech enterprise Meta Materials Inc.
