Older South Koreans Turn to Dating Apps: Couple.net

FINANCIAL TIMES - Adult children are helping their parents find matches to combat elderly poverty and suicide. e.g. Couple.net, is a South Korean dating app that helps adult children find partners for their parents. Lee Woong-jin, president of dating app provider Sunoo, which operates Couple.net, said: "Many elderly live alone. We even have a 93-year-old...In the past, it was parents who applied for dating services for their adult children. Now the trend has reversed." South Korea's birth rate is 0.84 babies per woman and last year, its population shrank for the first time.

Couples Market Is Heating Up

VENTURE BEAT – May 20 – According to numbers provided by Couple, Avocado, Between and You&Me, the couples market is poised to grow. Between has seen 7.45M downloads, primarily in South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. Couple has 2.5M downloads, and Avocado has 2M. HowAboutWe's You&Me has 143K downloads less than 3 weeks after launch, and is backed by HAW's 3M userbase. You&Me currently leads in daily downloads. The potential market for couples apps is just as large as WhatsApp's 500M users.

Pair Buys UK’s Cupple And Rebrands As Couple

TECH CRUNCH - Feb 3 - Tenthbit, the mobile app studio behind the couples app Pair, has bought Cupple, a UK-based rival mobile app for two people only, and has rebranded itself as Couple. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Tenthbit raised a seed round of $4.2M in May 2012. Cupple will, for now, remain as a standalone app, but users will have the ability to migrate their data to Couple from Cupple if they choose. Cupple did not disclose current usage figures, downloads or geographical reach. Pair meanwhile notes 1.25M messages sent every day, 160m messages between couples to date and 800K downloads.
