NY TIMES - Nov 10 - “Traditional online dating takes too much time,” said Lauren Kay, 24, a founder of the Dating Ring, a group dating company that started last spring. She requires singles to meet with an in-house matchmaker, before being set up in groups of three single men and women ($20 a date). "Group dating is simply a version of general night life, said Abel Acuña, a founder of Martini, a group-dating service in New York, Paris, London and Seoul, South Korea. These services make fewer claims about arranging romance, promising only the low-stress opportunity of hanging out. Grouper bills itself as a social club. “We are more excited about groups that are 12 and higher,” said Sam Yagan, founder of OKCupid.com and CEO of Match.com.

FOX BUSINESS - Aug 13 - Dating site Grouper sets up groups of friends for drinks, to see if there is a potential match within the crowd. The site was created by Michael Waxman who started the site after breaking up with his college girlfriend and moving to New York, finding himself disenchanted with the dating options. The sites sets up drinks between two groups of friends, and is always three-on-three. Each person pays $20 to secure a reservation as well as the first round of drinks. From there, it’s anyone’s game, Waxman says. Grouper is available in 25 cities across the U.S.

TECH CRUNCH - May 30 - Grouper has been around since 2011. The service matches users with singles they may enjoy canoodling with, but asks that each party bring two of their friends for a group date. Grouper was founded by Michael Waxman. In his opinion, Grouper has a leg up on the competition because it facilitates real-life meeting, whereas traditional dating sites and social networks are more focused on letting you message and look at photos.

GIGAOM - Apr 30 - There have been no shortage of next-generation dating apps launching recently. And most of these, like Grindr or Tinder, are already mobile and location-based. But Grouper CEO Michael Waxman said the company will add the benefits of mobile while maintaining the central premise of the app that’s made it so popular. Grouper has been working to streamline the process and get people together faster. Adding a mobile app is the final piece. The new iPhone app will be available next week.

NPR - Mar 14 - Modern dating is now a group sport, said Michael Waxman, CEO of Grouper, a dating site that uses Facebook profiles to set up blind dates of six. People in their 20s are used to experiencing and sharing things through social media. They're turned off by labels like "dates" and they hate being rejected. Users sign up for Grouper through Facebook. And it uses their Facebook profile to match them up with a blind date. Next, they recruit two of their friends. The blind date does the same. And then, Grouper sends all six of them on a group date. Everyone pays $20 — to make sure they show up, as well as cover the first round of drinks.

BOSTON GLOBE - Jan 29 - Tawkify, a blind-date matchmaking site, bills itself as “the new old way to date.” It is one of several matchmaking start-ups tailored to millennials who seek companionship, but who have no interest in enduring a string of traditional one-on-one dates to find it. “Social club” is how Grouper is billed. Grouper uses members’ Facebook profiles to set up a date between two people — who each invite two friends along, increasing the odds of clicking with someone. MeetCute sends potential matches to a location but doesn’t reveal them to each other, forcing participants to connect with their MeetCute match or with a total stranger. OkCupid just launched Crazy Blind Date, an app that lets users pick a location and a day, then sit back and get paired up someone to go out with. Such casual or creative meet-ups may offer more “guaranteed fun” than the typical dinner or drinks. Making online meet-ups as relaxed as possible could be the way to keep young people on the Web dating scene, said a Northwestern University psychology professor, Eli Finkel, who studies romantic relationships.
