BUZZFEED NEWS – There are a number of STI-focused dating apps, including H Date, HSV Singles, Meet Positives, Meet People With Herpes. Positive Singles is one of the most popular dating platforms for people with herpes, as well as other sexually transmitted infections like HIV and chlamydia. Successful Match, a dating company that owns niche dating sites like MillionaireMatch, InterracialMatch, SeniorMatch, and Meet People With Herpes, created Positive Singles in 2001. It boasts ~2.37M users, but it's experienced increased scrutiny over the years. In 2014, Successful Match paid out $16.5M in a settlement from a class action lawsuit after users accused the company of sharing private data with third parties. Positive Singles has made an increasing effort to recruit prominent STI influencers as product ambassadors over the years. Clinical psychologist and sex therapist Maggie Dancel said an STI dating platform has the potential to help those who are unable to escape the "damning and negative feelings associated with being diagnosed," and ideally find an empathetic community. But it may limit opportunities for growth and acceptance from the non-status community.

PositiveSingles, A Dating Site For People With STIs, Fined $16.5M
SKY – Nov 5 – SuccessfulMatch, the parent company of Positive Singles, is ordered to pay $16.5M in damages for displaying members' images on other sites. A lawsuit alleged that the plaintiff – known only as John Doe – and other members of Positive Singles were misled about their privacy when they joined the site. A jury agreed with Mr Doe's claim, and ordered the dating company to pay $1.5M in compensation to him, plus $15M in punitive damages.

Judge Gives HIV Dating Website A Break
COURTHOUSE NEWS – Apr 23 – Online daters failed to show that SuccessfulMatch.com misled them into believing their HIV and STD statuses would remain private, a federal judge ruled. People HIV positive joined PositiveSingles.com, a dating site that promised a free and "fully anonymous" profile. But its parent SuccessfulMatch.com allows its users to scan the full profiles – including HIV status – of all its affiliates, including PositiveSingles.com, according to the lawsuit.

US NEWS – July 31 – A class action suit against Successful Match alleges that the company broke the law and its promises of confidentiality to customers on PositiveSingles.com by sharing their HIV and STD statuses on "thousands" of spinoff sites, including HIVGayMen.com, STDHookup.com and Blackpoz.com. Meanwhile ChristianMingle.com, a datingsite for Christian singles, is also embroiled in a class action suit, for not offering its dating services to same-sex couples. Christian Mingle is being sued for a violation of human rights law in California, where same-sex marriage is legal.

John Doe v. PositiveSingles.com Class Action Certified
PR WEB – July 10 – The California Superior Court granted class certification in the class action lawsuit filed by John Doe against STD dating site PositiveSingles.com and SuccessfulMatch.com. Plaintiffs allege that the sites failed to disclose to members that their profiles would be accessible on ~1,000 websites other than the one they signed up on. Plaintiffs are seeking injunctive relief as well as restitution of their registration fees, compensatory, statutory and punitive damages.

PositiveSingles.com’s Privacy Promise Yields Angry Class
CINCINNATI NEWS – May 19 – PositiveSingles.com, a dating site marketed to users with sexually transmitted diseases, is promising 100% confidentiality. It specifically stated that that “(we) do not disclose, sell, or rent any personally identifiable information to any third party organizations.” Users of the service disagreed. According to their lawsuit, SuccessfulMatch.com, which operated Positive Singles, gave commissions to anyone who set up a domain name using its database. Positive Singles users found their profiles on hundreds of other dating websites.
