Team Behind Dating App HER Takes Pride in Supporting “Womxnhood”

Posted on February 8, 2019

Her icon 2019CNET – Feb 8 – HER bills itself as "the world's largest and most loved free dating app for LGBTQ+ women". "From the outset, what makes HER feel different is that it's designed by a diverse team of LGBTQ+ people for the LGBTQ+ community," said CEO & Founder Robyn Exton. "Other dating apps are typically built by men and then copied and marketed for the broader queer community. Because we're part of the LGBTQ+ community, we know the importance of inclusivity and being made to feel welcome and well-thought-of in this space." When HER first launched in 2015, it was initially only open to female-identified and non-binary users. But in 2016, the app began welcoming all identities other than cis men. HER use the term "womxn," a more progressive nomenclature than women, that's also both intersectional and inclusive, in their user interface copy. All accounts must be verified by phone, Facebook or Instagram first. There are 20 sexual identities to choose from. HER offers a premium membership, with pricing starting at $14.99 per month.

The Meet Group: Live Streaming Can Ease Loneliness

Posted on December 12, 2018

Themetgroup logoDOWNLOAD – Dec 11 – In a recent study, Cigna, the health insurance provider, concluded that loneliness is an epidemic afflicting most Americans, but that Generation Z (18-22) and Millennials (23-37) suffer from feelings of disconnection the most. The study also found that those who engaged in frequent meaningful interactions were less lonely and those who did it daily felt even less isolated. The Meet Group, which owns social dating apps MeetMe, Skout, Tagged and LOVOO, was curious to see if the Live video chat component of its MeetMe app could make its users feel more connected. The company sent out a survey to MeetMe users, and of the 6K respondents, 70% reported that using the Live video feature very often made them feel less lonely. On average, as of Q3 2018, the platform had 117K broadcasters each day with an average of ~25M minutes spent in video daily in October.
