Before taking anyone on as a client, there's a brief phone consultation in which it's decided if they're 'suitable' and then it's a full on interview. This takes place in their homes, or in the Berkeley International Offices. The clients are a mixture of lawyers, self-made business owners and celebrities.

BUSINESS INSIDER - July 20 - Elite matchmakers shared their vetting process for high-net-worth clients as part of Business Insider's "Dating Like a Millionaire" series. Two of the matchmakers said they make house calls to get a better feel for a millionaire's lifestyle and personality. An organized home can indicate that the owner is a grown-up, whereas a messy home can be a red flag. "You can tell a lot from a person by looking through a keyhole," said Mairead Molloy of Berkeley International, who is based in London. Berkeley's pricing starts from £15K and goes up to £60K for private headhunting, with a year of unlimited introductions. Highly tailored packages can run up to £100K. Mother-daughter matchmaking duo Janis and Carly Spindel of Janis Spindel Serious Matchmaking Inc. in New York City also make house calls. They said: "We go in the fridge, their medicine cabinets, and their closets."

The business is booming thanks to a combination of digital dating fatigue and global uncertainty - a trend she calls the "lipstick effect." "When times are tough people spend more on themselves and the same applies to dating and introductions," said Mairead Molloy, the global director of matchmaking at Berkeley International.

More New Yorkers Are Searching For Long-distance Love
FT - Mar 8 - Maireed Malloy, Berkeley introductions, which charges £18K per year, recorded a 48% rise in the number of Londoners she has set up with New Yorkers in the last 10 months. New York-based Agape Match, which charges $15K for six introductions, showed a similar spike. Maria Avgitidis, said the "stupid rules" of New York's singles scene – with men waiting 3 days to call after a date, or dating multiple women simultaneously – meant women were more inclined to look elsewhere for romance.

FT - Feb 14 - Inga Verbeeck is head of European operations at Berkeley International, a dating agency for the very wealthy. Berkeley membership costs a minimum €10K a year. Berkeley has grown in 10 years from 300 to 3,000 members. Ms Verbeeck says the plan is to reach 10K members within three years, including a move into same-sex dating. The business has opened offices in Brussels, Paris and Milan and will add Geneva, Amsterdam and Copenhagen this year. It also has a small presence in the US that it aims to expand. ~60% of Berkeley’s members are women and roughly the same proportion are divorced. Vetting potential members normally takes a couple of weeks. 1 in 10 applicants is politely turned down, usually because they have unrealistic expectations.
