INDEPENDENT.CO.UK - July 18 - Forced marriage is an awful crime, and Operation Limelight – the unprecedented fightback led this week in airports by the police and border force in the peak Summer holiday period – is long overdue. According to the government's Forced Marriage Unit, one third of victims are under 18. To eliminate forced marriage, we will have to understand what really drives these parents to abuse their own children. For many of parents, forced marriage is a last resort when they fear their child won't find a spouse in the UK. It almost happened to Adeem Younis. As he grew older and remained single, his mother started to pressure him into "doing the right thing" and marrying a family friend or distant relative in Pakistan. He started a Muslim matrimonial site (SingleMuslim.com) instead and within months he met his wife online. Forced marriage is not arranged marriage. It can range from subtle social pressure, to outright coercion or, in extreme cases, kidnapping.

He said his site has sparked ~100K marriages since it was founded in 2000 and has 2M registered users globally. SingleMuslim.com is currently #8 in the top ten general dating platforms in the UK. The site is currently focused on UK, USA, Australia and Canada, but Younis has imminent plans to develop the brand in the Middle East and Asia.

SingleMuslim.com Claims 50,000 Marriages
THE GUARDIAN - Nov 5 - SingleMuslim.com is one of the biggest dating sites in the world that claims ~50k marriages. The site's founder Adeem Younis was a design student at Wakefield College in Yorkshire with a passion for IT. He started SingleMuslim.com 17 years ago. "It was at a time when a lot of forced arranged marriages were happening and it was causing a huge amount of tension and turmoil," he says. The company's headquarters is spread over three floors of a grand Victorian civic building opposite Wakefield town hall. It has a staff of more than 30. Younis has established other ventures. Most notable is the humanitarian charity Penny Appeal, which last year raised ~£14M, mostly from members of the marriage site, and now operates in disaster relief efforts, from Grenfell Tower to Haiti. SingleMuslim.com subscribers pay £30 a month (or £120 for a year) and much of that money is invested in making the platform a safe space. ~10% of members join as a family. In those cases, traditionally the mums or the grannies use the site to do the matchmaking. SingleMuslim.com has a growing membership in the US and Canada, the next push is into India and Pakistan.

Millions Of Muslims Are Signing Up For Online Dating
BBC - Dec 9 - SingleMuslim.com now boasts more than a million members. The site aims to provide clients with a partner for life. There is also Muslimmatrimony.com, which allows members to search for partners by the particular doctrine of Islam that they follow. HipsterShaadi.com used to market itself as the site for people looking for a partner but of whom their parents will also approve. Muslima.com claims ~5M members worldwide, and is owned by Cupid Media.

REUTERS -- May 1 -- Over the past two years there has been a boom in the use of Web sites that introduce Muslim men and women for marriage. Singlemuslim.com , which calls itself Britain's largest Muslim introductions agency, has seen registered users double over the past year to 100,000 and is opening sites in the U.S., Canada and Australia. On some sites, more than half the registered users are professional women with above-average incomes who use the service to save time and broaden the scope of their search. They are direct and demanding about what they are looking for. Shaadi.com, 'the world's largest matrimonial service,' has 10 million users, most in South Asia -- in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In Britain, 700,000 are registered, 40% average annual income of 40,000 pounds.
