'Are We Dating the Same Guy?' was founded just a few weeks after 'West Elm Caleb' went viral on Tik Tok. 'West Elm Caleb' is a twenty-something Brooklynite whose Tinder screenshots blew up after multiple women all shared negative experiences with him on TikTok. The saga underscored the power of the wider community to share intel and compare experiences. According to cyber dating expert and relationship coach Julie Spira, seeking out a 'reference' can be a way to vet your date and feel safer while navigating the digital courtship process. "In a perfect world, everyone should have a friend or family member as a reference, but don't count on it," says Julie. "The most valuable part of dating online is that there are digital tools to help you find information about your date."

Is It Time to Try Speed Dating?

NEW YORK TIMES - Ambyr Club is a new speed dating service that launched last December and has since hosted seven events at trendy bars in Manhattan. "What's old is new again," said Julie Spira, a dating coach who runs a company called Cyber-Dating Expert. She noted that the first documented speed dating event was held at a coffee shop in Beverly Hills in 1998. Using data from a speed dating company called HurryDate, a 2005 University of Pennsylvania study found that most people gauge attraction within three seconds of meeting. Maxine Williams founded We Met IRL, a speed dating company for people of color, in January. "I came up with the idea in December after attending a speed dating event in Manhattan that wasn't very diverse," she said. CWAQ, which stands for "connect with a qutie," was also inspired by disappointment. Kevin Rabinovich, a freelance event producer, was let down by the lack of structure and diversity at such events.

Match.com launched The Stir, events that can include everything from happy hours with ~100 people to smaller happenings like wine-tastings or rock-climbing. Q: What inspired you to write a book about online dating?
A: I become single at the age of 31. I started using online dating and also found out my parents met through a computer dating service in the '60s. I went to iDate in 2011 to learn about the business and wrote an article in GQ, which became a launching pad.

Q: You take the position that online dating threatens monogamy.
A: People who are in relationships, which aren't fantastic, might have stayed together before. Online dating makes it easier to leave and find someone better.

Q: Do you think the dating algorithms help to create better matches?
A: I believe online dating is getting better at predicting who would get along on a first date.

Q: Do you agree marriage will become obsolete?
A: No. People who are in successful marriages will tell you that marriage is one of the best things that has ever happened in their lives.

Q: With the announcement of Facebook's Graph Search, how do you think that will affect the traditional online dating sites?
A: It will help the industry. Once people experience dating on Facebook, it sends society a huge message that any stigma attached to this is now gone.

Q: What's next for Dan Slater?
A: I'm a journalist and I want to write. I will now be a lifetime follower of the industry and who the players are as well.

Facebook Unleashes Cupid Potential

USA TODAY - Jan 17 - Facebook is becoming an online love connection — or maybe a meat market. Facebook's new Graph Search, in limited beta release, extends searches for singles on the network to friends of friends. The new feature, primarily for finding what friends "Like" from music to food and more, is expected to be available more widely over the next few months. It offers a speedy way to sort potential mates. Men will be able to hunt for single women who live in their locale and like a particular taco stand, action movies and sports teams, for example. Dating norms, however, have already taken root on Facebook. People have long-perused the photos and postings of members in the game of attraction, says Julie Spira, a digital-dating maven who runs CyberDatingExpert.com. "It's the world's largest social network, and they could be the world's largest dating network if they want to go there," Spira said. The Search Graph, for now, only culls "Like" selections and has yet to tap into profiles or News Feed data.
