YOUR STORY – Aug 28 – According to Statista, dating apps are projected to be used by 4.3% of India's population by 2025 – up from 3% in 2021. And riding this wave is Bengaluru-based Jitesh Bisht, who launched HiHi App, a dating app, in June 2020. HiHi currently has ~100K downloads, according to data available on the Google PlayStore. After giving users free access for the first six months, Hihi's makers decided to put some features behind a paywall. While earlier users could swipe as many profiles as they wanted, now there is a limit of 15 free profiles a day. The app also has a video calling feature. There are between 30K and 40K monthly active users on the app, out of which Jitesh aims to convert 5-10% into paid subscribers.

Dating Apps Revolutionize Romance in India
NIKKEI ASIA – May 5 – Dozens of apps — other big names include Woo, TrulyMadly, OkCupid, Happn, Hinge, Tantan, QuackQuack and HiHi — are helping singles to pair up with partners of their choice. According to Statista.com, the online dating segment's turnover in India is expected to reach $783M by 2024 from $454M in 2021, making the country the second-largest national revenue generator for dating apps after the U.S. Currently, dating apps reach 2.2% of India's total population, with projections of 3.6% by 2024, according to industry surveys. Aisle achieved 3M downloads worldwide last year despite competition from Tinder and Bumble. QuackQuack, an Indian dating app launched in 2010, boasts 12M. TrulyMadly, another Indian app, claims 5M users. "Indian society is in a churn," says Delhi-based sociologist Bhavna Kapoor. "Rising education and financial independence among the youth, especially women, are making online dating more popular.

Homegrown Indian Dating Platforms
FORBES INDIA – Dec 23 – The online dating industry in India is worth $323M, and the country is the third-largest revenue generator, after the US and China. Although foreign dating apps were the first to create a significant mark in India, homegrown apps are now witnessing a slow and steady rise. These include Aisle, Truly Madly or HiHi. They are positioning themselves as means to look for longer-term relationships. But they still lag far behind older match-making platforms. Beginning with Bharat Matrimony (matrimony.com) in 1997, online platforms to look for life partners is now estimated to be worth $260M, with some of the big players being Matrimony.com, Jeevansathi.com and Shaadi.com. According to Statista, the number of registrations on Matrimony.com were 40M as of FY20, up from 18M in FY14. From having ~10% market share in 2010s, they now have 50% market share.
HiHi – New Vibrant, Online Community Launched in India
