TECH CRUNCH - Yubo, a social livestreaming app popular with Gen Zs, is adopting a new age verification technique that uses live image capture technology to identify minors using its app, in order to keep them separated from adult users. Founded in 2015, Yubo users hang out in livestreaming rooms where they can socialize, play games and make new friends. The company today has seen 60M sign-ups, which is up from the 40M it reported in 2020 when it closed on its $47.5M Series C funding round; 99% of them are Gen Z users, ages 13 to 25. Yubo is seeing increasing revenue via its à la carte premium features and subscriptions, which grew from €7M in 2019 to now €25M as of last year.

NEW YORK POST - A popular teen dating app named Yubo has come under fire after an investigation found it to be a cesspool of sexual harassment, racism and other sordid activities. "What I have heard about this site is sickening," said Chris Philp, Britain's minister for tech and the digital economy. A Times reporter spent 10 days posing as a 15-year-old on Yubo, which she noted didn't require an age verification. During her investigation, she claimed that users would frequently proposition her and ask for nude pics.

WALL STREET JOURNAL - Mar 6 - Dating apps are taking a platonic turn. An analysis by venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz showed friend discovery is the fastest-growing category of mobile social apps in the U.S. Citing data from Apptopia, with friendship apps like Itsme, Wink and Yubo being the fastest-growing apps nationwide. Bumble BFF accounted for 9% of its total monthly active users as of Sep 2020. That traffic seems to have come mostly organically. Match Group has also been chasing friendships and other platonic connections. It estimates this market is twice the size of dating. Match Group paid $1.7B in cash and stock for South Korean social-media company Hyperconnect in its biggest acquisition ever. Hyperconnect is already generating profits and did $200M in revenue in 2020, up 50% YOY. Hyperconnect owns two video apps in Azar, which is the highest grossing one-to-one video chat app in the world; and Hakuna, which offers group live video, audio and avatar-based streaming.

MADDYNESS - Dec 31 - Little known in France, the French social network Yubo, once nicknamed the "Tinder for teens", already has 40M users, half of which are in the US and only 4% in France. On Yubo, young people aged 16 to 21 can interact by chat or live-streaming. Over the past few months, Yubo has acquired 3.5M new members in the US alone and experienced 1200% growth in Latin America. The app did not rely on an aggressive marketing strategy, it grew organically by word of mouth.

TECH CRUNCH - Nov 18 - French startup Yubo, which focuses on young people under 25, has managed to attract 40M users. A fraction of them hang out every day in live-streaming rooms, meet new people and spend money for more features. Yubo expects to double its revenue this year to $20M. The app has recently closed a Series C funding round of $47.5M (previously raised $19.5M) With this funding round, Yubo will expand its team. There are currently 30 employees in Paris, London and Jacksonville. Yubo will open an office in New York.

TECH CRUNCH - Dec 12 - French startup Yubo has raised a $12.3M funding round led by Iris Capital and Idinvest Partners. Existing investors Alven, Sweet Capital and Village Global are also participating. The startup has managed to attract 25M users since its launch in 2015. Yubo is a social media app for young people under 25 with one focus in particular on helping teenagers meeting new people and creating friendships. In 2019, the startup has generated $10 million in revenue. Yubo will use this funding round to also improve safety. The company already partners with Yoti for age verification.

TECH CRUNCH - Aug 2 - Yoti, the London startup offering a digital identity platform and app that lets users prove who they say they are when accessing services or making age-verified purchases, has raised £8M in additional funding. The startup had raised £65M in total since being founded in 2014. Yoti has formed a variety of partnerships including Heathrow Airport, which is working with Yoti to explore biometric travel for passengers; NCR, which is using Yoti to improve age-verification at self-checkouts; and Yubo, which is deploying Yoti to verify the age of users and to "safeguard" young people online.

PIX11 - Feb 26 - Yubo is marketed as an app for kids ages 13 - 17 to make new friends, but with the swipe feature, the app has become known as the Tinder for teens. Originally created early last year as Yellow, the app boasts ~15M users worldwide. According to the child safety website PureSight, one in five teenagers say they have received an unwanted sexual solicitation via the web, and 75% of teens are willing to share personal information online. In almost all underage sexual predator cases, the teens have gone willingly to meet with them. What's also new to the app is a live-streaming option where teens chat about anything and everything to complete strangers. Since rebranding in December, the company has increased its security features to include technology to detect fake profile pictures; a child online safety consultant; a required mobile number to register, which is recorded and verified; and a reporting abuse feature to inform the company of inappropriate activity.
